It’s back to school time, so why not get the kids ready with a fun back to school matching game?
Back to school matching game
This back to school style matching game is perfect to prep your child for back to school and help them learn what all the fun items they’re going to need are!
And if you’re a teacher it’s a fun first day activity to help the kids get comfortable in your classroom and work on their short term memory skills in the process! You can even use this to call out different supplies and see who can find it’s match first!
School themed matching game for kids
This fun school themed matching game is perfect for little ones 2-6yrs old (older is ok too!). Let them match all the school supplies and see how well they do!
And if you want a bit more of a challenge, you can have the little ones name what things are as they match them! That way they can also learn what some cool school supplies are in the process.

What’s Included:
- 8.5×11 printable card sheet
- 8.5×11 printable back sheet
Supplies Needed:
Below are the supplies I recommend to make the best out of your game!
- Bright White Cardstock (not required but makes it pretty!)
- Printer (this HP ones my favorite)
- Self-Adhesive Laminating Sheets (not required but sure makes the job easier!)
Pro Tip: Use laminate sheets to make this game reusable and not as easy to destroy/bend when little hands are playing with it!
How to play the matching game
Below you’ll find the link to the free printable which includes both a front and back sheet. I typically recommend matching games to be printed on bright white card stock to prevent them from being see through. However, if you don’t have that option available you can use the back sheet included and glue them together with a glue stick to prevent them from being see through when you play.
Once you’ve printed out your sheet(s) you can begin cutting! Cut each square on the dashed line to create your cards. Now you’re ready to turn them over and start matching!
You will want to set aside a place (at the table or on the floor) for this activity, unfortunately it’s not one of our on the go printables like our activity sheets but that’s ok! You can still spread out and enjoy this fun activity at home!
What are the benefits of a memory game?
There’s so many great benefits to this fun activity, a big one being visual memory of course! It also helps kids improve their memory, focus, develop problem-solving skills, fine motor skills, social skills, and confidence, all while having fun!
Overall, matching games are a fun and engaging way for kids to develop a range of important skills while also having fun.
